Keep an eye on your water meter readings
We read your meter every 6 months, but you can provide meter readings anytime you like.
Unusually high meter reading?
If your metered bill seems unusually high, there could be a few reasons for this so we can help you work out why.
Was your previous bill based on an estimate? If your previous estimate was too low, your current bill may include additional costs from previous bills. You'll need to give us an up to date reading so that we can adjust your bill.

Your garden
Have you been out in the garden more recently? Using a hosepipe for just
one hour uses as much water as the average person uses in three days
(one day average usage = 155 litres).

Faults and appliances
There may be faults around your home, such as taps or toilets and
washing machines or heating tanks.
These types of appliances may have
been leaking or dripping causing higher water usage. A dripping tap can
waste as much as 140 litres a week.

Increased usage
You may have more people living in the property, or have had visitors
during the bill period. More showers and more loads of washing could
increase the water.

The pipes for your home
The pipes taking water in and out of your home may be leaking. See our advice about supply and pressure.

Building or renovating
If you have done any building, renovation, or decorating since your
previous bill, that could mean you have used more water than normal.

A longer billing period
The reading may be covering a longer period of time than your previous bill, especially if you have recently moved.
